Course Objective

“The Night Before” is an experiential training designed for school resource officers or officers

who frequently interact with children in a school setting. This training provides officers with an

understanding of trauma, how trauma impacts children, their development, and their greater

caregiving systems. Officers will learn how students’ experiences can present in the classroom

and what role SROs can play in preventing negative outcomes.

Course Content

Officers will learn how to improve cultural competency and communication and strategies to

foster beneficial relationships with students. Officers will receive thorough instruction to

enhance critical thinking to promote the identification of bias using the Problem-Based Learning

(PBL) framework. The instructors will facilitate the hands-on application of the PBL process

using scenario-based videos designed specifically for school resource officers. Officers will

understand how the PBL process can mitigate the impact of bias, improve critical

decision-making, strengthen communication, and enhance empathy for the students they serve.

Officers will recognize that the PBL framework can be a tool to circumvent violent behavior and

school safety threats. Most importantly, this training demonstrates officers’ power to positively

impact the lives of the students they serve and provides the necessary skills.

This training includes an officer wellness component. Officers will receive information and tools

to improve their professional and personal wellbeing. Wellness instruction will focus on early

recognition of adversity and stress symptoms, enhancing promotive and protective factors of

resilience, and emphasizing successful mindsets,
